MySQL General Information

Mysql is an open source, freely available database that has become a very popular alternative to commercial databases in the market. It can be installed on Linux, Windows, or Mac platforms and comes with many utilities and tools that make it quite simple to create a database and get it up and running in a relatively short amount of time. MySQL is currently owned and maintained by Oracle...and the free community version of the database can be downloaded at dev.mysql.com for your specific operating system. Many different linux distros have pre-bundled mysql installs with their respective package managers. Recently, a few Linux distros have adopted a fork of the MySQL initiative called MariaDB over MySQL, but both are mostly interchangeable and compatible with the other...at least for the time being.
